Windy conditions, fire weather danger due to morning's cold front

1 week ago 26

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A cold front has pushed through the area and winds have become strong and will stay that way for today, tapering off later tonight and early Thursday morning. Wind speeds will be in the 25 to 35 mile per hour range with gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour likely. A wind advisory is in effect for all of the Rio Grande Valley until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

This is a valley-wide wind and fire event due to very low relative humidity values and very dry vegetation due to the lack of significant rainfall as of late. In addition to the wind advisory, a fire weather warning has been posted for all inland areas of the RGV also until 9 p.m. this evening.

During a Fire Weather Warning, always follow the instructions provided by your local emergency officials and maintain a heightened awareness of anything that can generate a spark or flame. Always be prepared to take action if a wildfire develops in your area.

Conditions will rapidly improve late tonight into Thursday morning as the winds decrease to around 5 to 15 miles per hour and stay fairly light for the daytime hours on Thursday.
