Texas tax assistance non-profit offers free legal help with the IRS

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Taxpayer Assistance Project is a non-profit organization offering free legal representation to people who have a pending issue with the Internal Revenue Service.

The TTAP also conducts outreach with many community organizations such as school districts. With tax season underway, TTAP would like to share information about the free services offered.

Reveriano Torres with TTAP said, "Every single year, there's a lot of bad information, misinformation, and outright fraud that occurs when you prepare your tax returns. When people prepare their tax returns, they expect a refund and sometimes they don't get the refund. They receive a letter from the IRS telling them there's an issue, there's missing information, or they owe taxes. When people receive that letter, many people don't know that. They don't know they can fight the decision, and get through the appeals process. The appeals process takes about months to a year, you can do it by yourself. You can hire a private attorney out of your pocket, or you can apply for help from our project. The help we offer is completely free."

If you or someone you know has a pending issue with the IRS call 956-986-8752 to see if you qualify for free legal help.
