BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The premier for The Long Game movie will show at Cinemark at Sunrise Mall in Brownsville on Friday, April 12, the Brownsville Border Film Commission has announced.

The Long Game tells a true story of the San Felipe Mustangs, a group of Mexican-American youths living in Del Rio, Texas. In the 1950s, the group set out to play golf at a white country club in town. That did not go down well. Despite prejudice, the Mustangs overcame numerous obstacles to become the 1957 Texas state champions.

The Long Game is a 2023 American historical drama film adaptation of Humberto G. Garcia’s 2010 novel Mustang Miracle.

The film is directed by Julio Quintana and stars Jay Hernandez, Julian Works, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Brett Cullen, Oscar Nuñez, Paulina Chávez, Gregory Diaz IV, José Julián, Cheech Marin, and Dennis Quaid. It is being distributed by Mucho Mas Media.

“This movie is right up my alley. It’s a movie about ordinary kids doing extraordinary things. It’s just the feel good movie of triumph. It’s a movie of overcoming obstacles, odds. Also societal issues that exist and how the power of having a good guide a mentor and teamwork believing in each other can just make young people just so successful,” said Brownsville City Commissioner Tino Villarreal, Jr.

“And that message is so important to Brownsville. And so we want to drive kind of that that we want the word the buzz to go around town, because the premiere for everyone in the box office for it’s going to premiere next Friday, April 12.”

Hilda Ledezma, founder and CEO of Revival Of Cultural Arts (ROCA) in Brownsville, said that after the glamour surrounding the movie has subsided, her organization will be holding workshops.

“We will have a special project this summer in which ROCA scholars and any other youth that wants to be involved (can learn about) the production of small and ultra short movies,” Ledezma said. “Our mission is to create these opportunities.”

Asked about The Long Game, Ledesma said: “I think this movie is really inspiring. It’s not only talking about their resiliency, but anything that we ourselves in our community can identify with. It also brings in open source horizons, you know, the mindset to be able to accomplish also our goals and our vision.”
