Biden wins Texas Democratic primary

President Biden won Texas’s Democratic primary Tuesday, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Biden just last week visited the southern border in ruby-red Texas on the same day as former President Trump, his likely GOP rival in November. Biden has tried to take some of the blame off of himself for the influx of migrants at the border, while Republicans have sought to keep it a hot-button issue for voters.

The Biden campaign sees Trump’s hand in getting Republicans to kill a bipartisan proposal to bolster resources at the southern border as a major messaging gift for them, and the president attempted to drive home that point on his visit last week.

Meanwhile, polling has shown voters trust Trump on immigration more than Biden and that a sizable number of Americans think it is a pressing issue.

Biden had been wrestling with whether to take executive action on how asylum claims are handled at the southern border, a move that would take some of the blame off of him for the influx of migrants. But, such a move would anger progressives and activists and would likely be hit with legal challenges.

Biden has had a frosty relationship with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R). When Biden visited the border in January 2023, Abbott handed him a letter blasting the visit as two years too late.

Trump won Texas in 2020 with more than 52 percent of the vote.
