HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — ValleyCentral will be bringing live, up-to-date results on the race for the U.S. House, District 28.

The 28th district encompasses areas in the eastern outskirts of San Antonio, travelling south to areas like Laredo and Rio Grande City.

Incumbent Henry Cuellar will run unopposed on the Democratic ticket, while the Republican side will feature a race between five men.

Democratic ticket

Henry Cuellar is serving his tenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Cuellar supports equal opportunities for men and women of all backgrounds, believing that education, family values and hard work should open doors for all Americans. Cuellar was born one of eight children to migrant farm workers in Laredo, and is now the most degreed member of Congress. Cuellar earned both a Juris Doctor and a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Texas at Austin.

Republican ticket

Jose Sanz is a former ESPN-Mexico on-air talent, according to his campaign page. Sanz served in the office of Congressman Cuellar, who could now be his opponent on the Democratic side. Sanz served as a district director and press secretary. Sanz's campaign page states that the southern border is in a crisis, with conservative morals and way of living being threatened. "If we do not act now, the America we grew up in will be reduced to a distant memory," the page stated.

Lazaro Garza Jr. is a South Texas native, and describes himself as a farmer, rancher and entrepreneur. Garza earned a Bachelor's degree in political science in 1975 at Texas A&M Kingsville, before later working for the Benavides School District, according to his campaign page. Garza too believes that the border is in a crisis, and adds that the oil and gas industry is under attack. Additionally, Garza states that the education system is neglected, despite being in an already critical state.

Jimmy Leon served in the U.S. Army in the early 1980s, before working as an educator and an administrator, according to Ballotpedia, where he completed a candidate connection survey. When asked for the key messages of his campaign, Leon also described border security as a national emergency, and added that he strongly supports Texas oil and gas. Leon states that he is a strong supporter of former President Trump's non-inflation policies.

Jay Furman retired after 28 years of military service, and returned to Texas where he described being shocked by fake borders, lost freedoms and rising prices, according to his campaign page. He describes himself as an "American First conservative," Christian and devoted husband and father. Furman aims to empower small businesses and block out the "woke insanity."
