LIST: Valley primary races headed to runoff

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Several local races in Hidalgo and Cameron counties are headed to a runoff.

Unofficial election results show seven local races did not meet the required criteria to declare a winner on Super Tuesday.

A Texas primary runoff election happens when a race involving three or more candidates did not meet the required 50% of votes plus one vote to confirm a win.

Cameron County Sheriff

Results from the Cameron County Election's Office show Democratic incumbent Eric Garcia took the lead in Tuesday's election with 37% of the total votes.

Democratic runner up Manuel "Manny" Saenz reached a 26% total of votes on Tuesday, reports show.

Both candidates fell short of the required 50% vote mark to secure the Democratic seat for Sheriff, taking them to a runoff.

Runoffs in Cameron County are scheduled for Tuesday, May 28.

Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector

Democratic incumbent Tony Yzaguirre will face off against Democratic candidate Eddie Garcia in the upcoming runoff elections.

Yzaguirre secured 45% of the votes on Super Tuesday, followed by Garcia taking 35% of votes.

State Rep. District 37

Democratic candidate Ruben Cortez Jr. took the lead in Tuesday's primary elections with 32% of votes.

Cortez's competition, Democratic candidate Jonathan Gracia, garnered 25% of the votes.

Hidalgo County 332nd State District Judge

Two Democratic candidates are ready to claim the soon-to-be open seat as judge for the 332nd Court in Hidalgo County.

Current Judge Mario Ramirez Jr. announced he will soon be retiring from his judicial service at the end of his term.

Democratic candidates Abiel Flores and Juan Ramon Alvarez came out neck and neck as the two with the majority of votes during the primaries.

Flores received 34.36% of votes totaling at 12,780.

Alvarez brought in 34.34% of votes totaling at 12,770, just 10 votes shy of Flores.

Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 3, Place 1

Incumbent Sonia Trevino will compete in the runoffs to secure her spot as Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3, Place 1.

Trevino was close to reaching the required 50% mark, earning 49.6% of votes.

Her opponent, Ramon Segovia, was behind Trevino with 25.51% of votes.

Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 4, Place 1

Democratic incumbent Charlie Espinoza will runoff against Rodolfo Zamorano Jr.

Results show Espinoza earned 47.15% of votes with Zamorano behind him earning 35.58% of votes.

Cameron County Pct. Chair No. 15

The Republican race for Cameron County Precinct Chair 15 ended in a tie with both candidates Stacy Beilstein and Mildreth Martinez garnering 45 votes each.
