EDINBURG, Texas – DHR Health will soon be celebrating the first anniversary of its stand alone General Medical Education program.

Dr. Manish Singh, chief executive officer of DHR, says the program is going well and will be expanding.

“So one year ago, DHR became their own GME site, training the new residents and physicians just like Dr. Andrew Phillips right here in the (Rio Grande) Valley and we will be coming up with the one year anniversary,” Singh said.

“We are very proud that we are going to increase the number of residencies, which will include orthopedics, OBGYN, and probably psychiatric because mental health has been a big issue for the Valley.”

Singh continued:

“We will be probably expanding the mental health and behavioral health services in the Valley. So you’ll hear the good news very soon. And, we will be expanding our graduate medical education towards one of our sister counties, or sister hospitals, Starr County Memorial Hospital. We will be placing residents there which is going to increase the quality of care we provide for the community.”

Singh said he is also proud of DHR’s work in Brownsville. Its hospital in the biggest city in the Valley opened a year ago.

“I’m so proud of our endeavor in Brownsville. At the end of March it is going to be one year since DHR opened its door to the community down there. It has been an upswing of emotions and support from the community and (there is a) happiness that I feel when I see and meet people from there. So, we are very excited and very proud of it.”

Singh gave his interview to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service following a press conference held to celebrate the one-year anniversary of DHR’s highly-rated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program.

Dr. Andrew Phillips, whom Singh referenced in the interview, runs the ECMO program.
