Man charged in deadly 5-vehicle crash arrested after missing court date

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man charged for his role in a deadly five-vehicle fatal crash is behind bars again after missing a court date.

Tyrone Dewayne Amos, of Omaha, Nebraska, is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault in connection to an Edinburg crash that left one person dead, records show.

Amos, who was out on bond, missed a status hearing that was scheduled for Feb. 15. The State filed a motion to revoke Amos' bond, stating that he failed to abide by conditions of his bond. According to the motion, Amos failed to obtain an alcohol monitoring device, failed to comply with conditions of the AIP program and failed to remain in Hidalgo County.

The document states that on Jan. 3, a probation officer attempted to visit him at the Salvation Army, where he said he was staying. Amos was not there, but instead texted the officer telling him he was in Omaha.

The officer told him that he needed to return, because he was ordered to remain in Hidalgo County as part of his bond conditions.

Three days later, the officer attempted another visit, but Amos was still in Nebraska. Amos then missed a status hearing on Jan. 13, before ultimately missing the hearing on Feb. 15, which was described as a final chance.

Amos contacted the court, and said he would appear via Zoom, which he failed to do, the document stated.

Records show that Amos was taken into custody by the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office on March 6.

Deadly crash

At 4:30 a.m., May 4, 2021, police responded to the 16000 block of N. Expressway 81 for a crash. Police said that Amos was driving south on the wrong lanes of the expressway, striking a pick-up truck head-on, resulting in a five-vehicle crash.

The driver of one of the vehicles involved died from their injuries, and six others were sent to a hospital. The victim was later identified as 27-year-old Victor Bazan Jr. of Palmview.

Amos' bond was initially set at $400,000, before it was reduced to $45,000, records show.

The indictment states that Amos collided with one or more vehicles, including a vehicle towing a trailer that other vehicles collided with. Additionally, the document accuses Amos of operating the vehicle while intoxicated with alcohol, a controlled substance or a combination of the two.
