2 Rio Grande City men died in vehicle crash near Pecos

PECOS, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A two-vehicle crash near Pecos killed two men from Rio Grande City, the Texas Department of Public Safety announced.

The victims were identified as 22-year-old Juan Elisandro Lopez and 40-year-old Luis Carlos Zamora.

According to a release from DPS, the incident occurred at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday near State Highway 17 and two miles south of IH-20.

Mission police locate decomposed body in field

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Ford F-150 was going northbound on State Highway 17 and attempting to pass a truck tracker trailer but failed to pass to the left lane safely.

A 2011 GMC Sierra, occupied by Lopez and Zamora, was going southbound on SH 17 when they hit the Ford F-150 head-on, according to state troopers.

Both Lopez and Zamora were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford-150 was reported to be in critical condition and transported to the University Medical Center for treatment.
