Coast Guard finds man who jumped into Laguna Madre

LAGUNA MADRE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man, who jumped into the Laguna Madre, was found near the highest point of the bridge, authorities say.

At 6 p.m. Sunday dispatch received a call regarding a man who jumped off a pier in Port Isabel, into the Laguna Madre. Those nearby said they lost sight of the man, according to Lt. Shane Gunderson, commanding officer for SPI Coast Guard.

Garbage truck flips on expressway, traffic backed up

A boat was dispatched and the man who was found near the highest point of the bridge 10 minutes later, Gunderson said.

The man was taken ashore and handed over to emergency medical services and the Port Isabel Police Department.

The man was reported to be in stable condition.

Lt. Gunderson wants to remind the public that while the Laguna Madre is shallow in places, the currents can be strong and at times dangerous. He asks the public to be cautious and to contact the coast guard if they see anyone in distress.
