Organizers explain what ‘Government for a Day’ is all about

MCALLEN, Texas – McAllen City Commissioner Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ Castillo and Futuro RGV leaders Nedra Kinerk and Laurel McLeaish have explained the concept of “Government for a Day.”

The idea, McLeaish said, came from something she learned when she worked for the then governor of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey, Sr. “He would take his government on the road,” McLeaish said.

The McAllen version consisted of inviting the residents of Castillo’s District 4 to an event at Palm View Community Center on Saturday, April 6. Along with breakfast and lunch, residents could interact with city staff to learn what programs and services are available and how they can be accessed.

The best part, Kinerk said, was a Q&A session involving residents and city leaders.

Commissioner Castillo said he hopes such civic engagement improves voter turnout, noting that participation in the most recent city election was poor.
